Judgment
Following: Great progress and success. Favorable to be steadfast and upright. No blame.
Lines
- First line (1): Initial Nine: The official changes his stance. Perseverance brings good fortune. Going out and associating with others brings merit.
- Second line (2): Six in the Second: Tied to the young man, loses the mature man.
- Third line (3): Six in the Third: Tied to the mature man, loses the young man. Following and seeking, one obtains what one desires. It is favorable to remain steadfast and upright.
- Fourth line (4): Nine in the Fourth: Following brings gain. Perseverance brings misfortune. If one is sincere and walks in the path, and is clear-sighted, what blame can there be?
- Fifth line (5): Nine in the Fifth: Sincere in what is excellent. Good fortune.
- Top line (6): Top Six: Bound and held fast, then released and followed. The king offers sacrifice on the Western Mountain.
In Practice
Following shows thunder beneath a lake: the strong willing to rest within the calm. It is the hexagram of adapting, of going along with what is larger or wiser, and of leading by drawing others to follow willingly. The core is choice: whom you follow shapes what you become, and the worthiness of your cause determines who follows you. The teaching is that following is not weakness when it is chosen well — and that influence is earned by being someone others freely choose to follow.
In love
One partner is leading and the other following, and the question is whether that is by free choice or by default. Healthy relationships have seasons of leading and following. Follow willingly where it is wise, but do not surrender your own direction entirely.
In career
Choose carefully whose lead you follow — a good mentor or leader shapes your path. And if you lead, lead by earning trust, not by demanding it. People follow competence and integrity far more readily than title.
In money
Follow proven strategies and seasoned advisors rather than reinventing everything yourself. But follow with open eyes: understand the reasoning, not just the recommendation, so you are never blindly led.
Guidance
Choose your direction, then choose whom to follow with discernment. Adapt to what is wise and larger than yourself, and if you lead, be someone others follow freely.
