In Practice

Biting Through shows thunder and lightning: the sudden, decisive force that cuts through what stands in the way. Its image is a mouth biting down on something hard that must be broken. It is the hexagram of the obstacle that cannot be negotiated around — the obstruction, the wrong, the problem that must be met directly and removed. The teaching is that there are times for gentle patience and times for a firm, just, and decisive bite. This is the latter. Act with clarity and fairness, but act.

In love

There is a hard issue between you that cannot be smoothed over — it must be named and faced. Have the difficult conversation. Bite through the avoidance with honesty, but do it fairly, without cruelty. What is not faced will keep blocking the way.

In career

A clear obstacle — a bad process, a persistent problem, a person who blocks progress — must be dealt with decisively. Do not endlessly accommodate what should be removed. Act with firmness and fairness, and clear the path.

In money

A drain or a bad position is the obstruction; it will not fix itself. Identify it precisely and cut it decisively. The bite is uncomfortable, but leaving the obstruction in place costs more than removing it.

Guidance

When something hard blocks the way, do not go around it forever. Meet it directly, with a firm and just bite, and remove it. Decisiveness, tempered by fairness, is the right tool now.

Watch out

Do not bite with cruelty or rage — the force must be just. But neither soften into endless accommodation; an obstruction left in place will only harden.
