Judgment
The Clinging, Fire. It is favorable to be steadfast and upright. Prosperous. Raising a gentle cow brings good fortune.
Lines
- First line (1): Initial Nine: Treading with careful steps, respecting this, no blame.
- Second line (2): Six in the Second: Yellow radiance, supreme good fortune.
- Third line (3): Nine in the Third: The sun sets, clinging to the dusk. If one does not beat the clay drum and sing, then the elder sighs in sorrow. Misfortune.
- Fourth line (4): Nine in the Fourth: It comes suddenly, blazing up, burning, dying, discarded.
- Fifth line (5): Six in the Fifth: Tears flow in torrents, sighing in grief. Good fortune.
- Top line (6): Top Nine: The king uses it to go on expeditions. There is merit in beheading the leaders, capturing not their followers. No blame.
In Practice
The Clinging shows fire over fire: brightness doubled, light that must cling to something in order to burn. It is the hexagram of clarity, illumination, and attachment. Its teaching is double: fire gives light only because it clings to fuel, so clarity depends on what you attach yourself to — the right values, the right people, the right purpose. And brightness, to endure, must be gentle, not scorching. The wise are luminous without consuming, attached to what is worthy without being consumed by it.

The warmth and clarity you bring to the relationship depend on what you are attached to. Attach to genuine love and shared values, and the bond burns steady and bright. But do not let the attachment consume you — give light, not scorching heat.

Clarity is your asset now, but it needs the right fuel: attach your work to a purpose and to people worth your loyalty. A mind that is bright but attached to the wrong thing burns itself out. Shine steadily, without burning through your own substance.
