Judgment
Darkening of the light. It is favorable to be steadfast in adversity.
Lines
- First line (1): Darkening of the light in flight, drooping its wings. The superior man on his journey goes three days without eating. Wherever he goes, people speak against him.
- Second line (2): Darkening of the light. He is wounded in the left thigh. He is saved by a strong horse. Good fortune.
- Third line (3): Darkening of the light during a southern hunt. He captures the great leader. Do not be hasty in correcting this.
- Fourth line (4): He enters the left side of the belly and perceives the heart of the darkening light. He then leaves through the gate and courtyard.
- Fifth line (5): The darkening of the light of Prince Ji. It is favorable to remain steadfast.
- Top line (6): No light, only darkness. First he ascends to heaven, then he descends into the earth.
In Practice
Darkening of the Light shows light sunk into the earth: brightness wounded, hidden, forced underground. It is the hexagram of the time when the good is suppressed, when the environment is hostile to truth and the bright are persecuted. Its counsel is to veil your light, protect your inner integrity, and endure until the darkness passes — not to extinguish the flame, but to keep it burning quietly within. The teaching is that in such a time, survival with your principles intact is the victory; shine too openly and you will be destroyed, shine not at all and you lose yourself.
In love
A relationship or family situation has turned hostile to your honesty, and being fully open now would only bring harm. Protect your inner truth, keep your light veiled, and endure with your integrity intact. This is not the time to fight openly, but neither to surrender who you are.
In career
The environment punishes honesty and suppresses the capable. Keep your head down, do your work with quiet integrity, and veil your light until the season changes. Your task now is to survive with your principles whole, not to be a martyr.
In money
A hostile or opaque market punishes the transparent. Be cautious, keep your resources protected and your moves quiet, and avoid drawing attention to your position. Endure the dark season with your capital — and your principles — intact.
Guidance
When the light is wounded and truth is punished, veil your brightness and protect your inner fire. Endure with integrity until the darkness passes. Survival with your principles intact is the victory of this season.
Watch out
Veil your light, but do not put it out; and do not mistake prudent concealment for complicity with the darkness. You are hiding the flame to keep it alive, not extinguishing it.
