In Practice

Decrease shows a mountain over a lake: the heights reduced to nourish the waters below. It is the hexagram of diminishment, sacrifice, and letting go. Its teaching is that decrease is not merely loss but a deliberate act — the mountain gives of its own substance to fill what is below. When sacrifice is made willingly and with sincerity, it paradoxically increases what matters. The image is of the small, simple offering made from the heart. The wise know what to give up, and give it up freely, so that the essential may grow.

In love

Something must be given up for the relationship to grow — a habit, a grudge, a competing priority. Decrease it willingly rather than resentfully. The sacrifice made with an open heart is what nourishes the bond; the one made with resentment poisons it.

In career

Cut back, simplify, and let go of what is not essential — a project, a cost, a commitment that no longer serves. Willing reduction now creates room for what matters. The leader who knows what to sacrifice is the one who can grow the rest.

In money

A season for cutting costs and letting go of what drains you. Decrease spending deliberately, and do it without resentment. The small sacrifice made willingly now is what frees resources for what truly matters later.

Guidance

Let go of what must be reduced, and do it willingly and with sincerity. The mountain that gives of its own substance nourishes what is below. Decrease, accepted, becomes the ground of increase.

Watch out

Sacrifice made with resentment poisons its own gift, and decrease that is merely imposed becomes depletion. Give freely what you give, and cut what truly should be cut — nothing more.
