The maiden is given in marriage. To act now brings misfortune. Nothing is gained by persisting.

- First line (1): The maiden is given in marriage as a younger sister. Though lame, she can still walk. To act brings good fortune.
- Second line (2): Though blind in one eye, she can still see. It is favorable to remain steadfast as a solitary person.
- Third line (3): The maiden is given in marriage as a concubine, but then returns to be a younger sister.
- Fourth line (4): The maiden is given in marriage, but the time is delayed. A late marriage has its proper time.
- Fifth line (5): The emperor's daughter is given in marriage. Her sleeves are not as fine as those of her younger sister. The moon is nearly full. Good fortune.
- Top line (6): The woman carries an empty basket; the man stabs a sheep but draws no blood. Nothing is gained.
In Practice
The Marrying Maiden shows thunder over a lake: excitement entering where it is not properly placed. It is the hexagram of a relationship entered for the wrong reasons, of desire without proper standing, of the person who acts on passion without the position or foundation to support it. Its teaching is sober: such a union has no lasting good fortune, and the wise restrain the impulse rather than surrender to it. The image is a young woman who, without the proper rites, follows her desire — and finds it leads nowhere firm. Recognize when passion lacks a foundation.
In love
The attraction is strong, but the foundation is missing — the timing, the standing, the mutual commitment are not in place. Be honest about this rather than swept along. A relationship built on desire without the proper foundation rarely holds. Restrain the impulse until the ground is right.
In career
You are tempted to act on ambition or impulse without the position or preparation to support it — reaching for a role, a deal, or a move you are not yet ready for. Hold back. Desire without standing leads nowhere firm. Build the foundation before you reach.
In money
A tempting move is pulling you, but the foundation is not there — insufficient capital, unclear terms, or a position taken on impulse. Restrain the urge. An investment made on desire without proper grounding rarely prospers. Wait until the footing is solid.
