Judgment
The Wanderer. Small progress. Perseverance brings good fortune to the wanderer.
Lines
- First line (1): The wanderer is petty and mean; this brings about his own misfortune.
- Second line (2): The wanderer arrives at an inn, carrying his possessions, and obtains the loyalty of a young servant.
- Third line (3): The wanderer's lodging is burned, and he loses his servant. Perseverance brings danger.
- Fourth line (4): The wanderer finds a place to stay, and obtains his means of livelihood, but his heart is not at ease.
- Fifth line (5): He shoots a pheasant with one arrow, and though he loses it, in the end he gains praise and a mandate.
- Top line (6): The bird's nest is burned; the wanderer first laughs, then wails. He loses his ox in a sudden turn of events. Misfortune.
In Practice
The Wanderer shows fire on a mountain: a traveler's fire burning on unfamiliar heights. It is the hexagram of the sojourner, the stranger, the person far from home and without the usual protections. Its teaching is that the wanderer succeeds only through humility, caution, and restraint — keeping a low flame, offending no one, and never presuming on ground that is not one's own. The stranger who is modest and careful finds shelter; the stranger who is proud and presumptuous finds hostility. Away from home, small virtues become survival itself.
In love
You are in unfamiliar emotional territory — a new relationship, a new phase, a situation where you are the newcomer and cannot presume. Be humble, careful, and restrained. Do not assert what you have not yet earned. The newcomer who is gentle finds welcome; the one who presumes finds rejection.
