Conflict shows heaven moving upward and water moving downward — two forces pulling apart. It is the hexagram of dispute, argument, and litigation. Its judgment is blunt: pushing the conflict to the end brings misfortune. The wise course is to stop early, seek a fair arbiter, and settle. Conflict is not forbidden; what is condemned is the insistence on winning at any cost. There is a time to stand up for yourself, but not a time to fight simply to be right.

In love

An argument is escalating, and the question is whether you want to be right or to be close. Stop escalating, listen, and if you cannot resolve it between you, bring in a neutral third person. Winning the fight often costs the relationship.

In career

A dispute — with a colleague, a client, or a contract — is brewing. Do not let pride push it to a lawsuit or a scorched-earth confrontation. Seek mediation, compromise early, and keep your reputation intact. The cost of winning is usually higher than the cost of settling.
